Dexona an corticosteroid drug
Dexamethasone is a corticosteroid used in teh treatment of inflammatory conditions as well as adrenal insufficiency.
Mode of Action
It decreases inflammation by suppressing migration of polymorphonuclear leukocytes (PMNs) and reducing capillary permeability; stabilizes cell and lysosomal membranes, increases surfactant synthesis, increases serum vitamin A concentration, and inhibits prostaglandin and proinflammatory cytokines; suppresses lymphocyte proliferation through direct cytolysis, inhibits mitosis, breaks down granulocyte aggregates, and improves pulmonary microcirculation.
Adverse Drug reaction
Fluid and electrolyte disturbances, congestive heart failure in susceptible patients, hypertension, muscle weakness, steroid myopathy, loss of muscle mass, osteoporosis, vertebral compression fractures, aseptic necrosis of femoral and humeral heads, pathologic fracture of long bones, tendon rupture, peptic ulcer ,perforation and hemorrhage, GI perforation, pancreatitis, abdominal distention, ulcerative esophagitis, impaired wound healing,acne,petechiae, ecchymoses, erythema, diaphoresis, skin test suppression, burning at injection site,convulsions, increasedintracranial pressure with papilledema (pseudotumorcerebri), vertigo, headache, psychic disturbances, menstrual irregularities, cushingoid state, suppression of growth in children, arrhythmias, cataract, glaucoma, depression, DM, osteoporosis, weight gain, vertigo, altered spermatogenesis, seizures
